When Linux boots there is always a partition check and in Debian there 
is /var/log/dmesg which contains all of the boot messages.

You should try looking through this file to help diagnose your problem.
Look for:

hda: Maxtor 2F030L0, ATA DISK drive

hda: attached ide-disk driver.
hda: host protected area => 1
hda: 60058656 sectors (30750 MB) w/2048KiB Cache, CHS=59582/16/63, UDMA(33)

Partition check:
 hda: [PTBL] [3738/255/63] hda1 hda2 hda3 hda4 < hda5 hda6 hda7 hda8 
hda9 hda10 hda11 >

These boot messages tell you how Linux sees the drive.  As you can see 
it tells you the drive geometry and it should match up with what you 
think you have.  This is where I would look first.
