If you don't mind doing a reinstall, there are a few distributions based 
on Debian that are easier to install, like Libranet and Xandros. I ahve 
used Libranet for about a year. I have it on three different machines, 
and it detected everything. I think you can even get a free version of 
Libranet 2.7 on linuxiso.org. And a lot of people love Knoppix.
