That is only necessary if the computers are on different subnets. Otherwise, NetBIOS broadcasts are all that is needed. Plug and play peer to peer networking.

I've been consulting Eckstein & Collier-Brown, Using Samba (O'Reilly, 2nd Edition). It recommends using the samba machine as a WINS server to avoid broadcasting, even if you only have a single subnet. Assuming that this may not always avoid broadcasting, are there any drawbacks to using WINS with a single subnet?
