I always enjoyed Quake, but I am really looking for a game along the
 lines of warcraft, civilization, command and conquer.


Freeciv comes in two packages one is for the server and there is a
choice of clients. There is also Railroad Tycoon II for Linux that was made by Loki corporation which went belly up. Somewhere you might find a CD for it.
