[PLUG] remember when you had a modem ...

and you could do all sorts of cool things with it from your computer ...
like make funny screeching noises and ... well, i guess that was about it

nonetheless, i have one, and it's set up to record voicemail and email
me using VOCP (www.vocpsystem.com)

the problem is the caller id is not working and i'd love to know who was
calling me before i launch my mp3 player

i know caller id is working ... i run minicom, tell the modem AT#CID=1,
and when a call comes in, there's the number!

if only i could either
a) get the modem to remember the setting or
b) have the mgetty.config init-chat string actually work (if that's the right place for my debian systme)

i've been scouring help pages for awhile but i have very limited
experience with how v/mgetty works and how the hardware in modems is
supposed to behave

any suggestions?
