X-10 control is the most "trivial" (read common). (masterhouse at source forge.) How about "other" stuff -- HVAV control, Dallas Semi's "1-Wire(tm)", RS485. I actually have all of them, but they are run by a Stargate OEM'd box called, "Micahel" - [Multimedia Interface Controlling Heating, AIr Conditioning, Energy & Lighting]. I keep telling myself that I'll add IR interfaces for Home Theater stuff, but haven't yet (they're sitting in a box). T.T.F.N. William H.
