This logic would also apply to old fashioned paper correspondence... and there had been few problems there. I think we are seeing two reasons for legitimate smiley proliferation. 1. Encroaching illiteracy leading to a loss of a literary sense of humor. 2. The Internet phenomenon of corresponding with people you never met. Often the context cues come from knowing the writer.
