[PLUG] system upgrade recommendations

hey folks,

as exciting as this whole top posting thread is...

in the next few days i'm going to be dropping a bit of cash to upgrade
my desktop system (mainly to get it in shape for HL2).  i already have
a video card that should handle it without much trouble, and i'm okay
on the miscellaneous peripherals, but definitely need a new mobo/cpu/ram.
i may go for a new case too, gutting most of the good stuff out of the
old machine but leaving enough for it to run in the closet.

i'm pretty set on going for an amd system, but even having decided
on a chip vendor, there are so many uncertain variables!  athlon xp?
64? opteron? mp?  what about motherboard?

i've been doing some shopping online (mostly pricewatch and a few
familiar sites i've dealt with in the past) and there seems to be
no end to the possibilities.

so... what i'm hoping is that others here have gone through a similar
process at some recent point, and that maybe some of you folks would
even be willing to share your experiences with any of the hardware
in question?
