[PLUG] pilot restore conundra

I am restoring my pilot data to a new palm device (a different model
Palm OS device). What I expect is that I should do a restore, then a
sync. I am using jpilot, which is also what backed up the previous
device.

When I do this, I see a difference of some 700 odd records (lost)
between the old device and the current. This is about 10% of the
7,000 records. I know this by using perl's Palm::PDB modules to dump
the thing in a plain-text file, where I can sort and diff.

The most recent backup was within a month, surely not 700 records
ago. Some of the deleted records are not even current. Many current
appointments are missing.

Any suggestions what might be going on or what to do?
