Folks, Thanks for inviting me to speak at the November PLUG meeting. Or should I say railroading me? Well, nobody else was volunteering, so I figured I would take the opportunity to share with you some of my insights as a software consultant with HP. I've been lurking on the PLUG list for years, but October was the first meeting where I have attended. I really came mostly just to see the MythTV. Thanks, Mike, for a great presentation and demo. So, at the November meeting it's my turn. You will all get to know me better and hopefully, I'll learn a little more about all of you as well. The topic of the talk is HP and Open Source. That's pretty broad. I thought after I introduced myself, I'd do a quick overview of HP and then dive into some of the things that HP is doing around Linux and Open Source. Here are some specific topics where I have some knowledge. This is not the agenda for my talk. I just want some feedback as to what you are or are not interested in hearing about. HP history - Bill and Dave and the garage. Then all those mergers and spin offs: Apollo, TI, Agilent, DEC, Compaq, Tandem, etc. Brief hardware overview - Just the techie facts. I'm not a sales guy and I don't think any of you want to be bored by a big sales pitch. FOSS as part of HP's business strategy - Not just Linux! MySQL, Jboss, and more Some HP FOSS projects - handhelds.org, elilo, Lustre/HP SFS, Linux printer drivers, etc. LinuxCOE - HP's internal infrastructure for deploying Linux systems and desktops (maybe a demo if I'm able to VPN in from USP) DRM/FOSS Paradox - Working through industry consortiums, lobbying, and the Open Source community to fix the DMCA. Working at HP - I can talk about my personal experiences and also about pursuing a job with HP (we are hiring Linux people) So, folks, you asked for it. Please let me know what you think sounds interesting. You may work off the list above or let me know of topics I may not have considered. Thanks, -Bob ___________________________________________________________________________ Philadelphia Linux Users Group -- http://www.phillylinux.org Announcements - http://lists.phillylinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug-announce General Discussion -- http://lists.phillylinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug
