The other possibility is to go wireless, although I'd want to be able

such a thing as a wireless hub? I don't need heavy routing

You can't beat the cost of wireless. Two WRT54G's will cost you less than $150.

A wireless hub is called an access point, in wireless terminology. Most wireless routers will also have a number of Fast Ethernet ports, as well (usually 4). I suspect what you want, however, is to configure one of the access point's as a repeater, which will simply turn it into a bridge. Check out Wireless Hacks from O'Reilly for some really neat stuff you can do with that and other wireless technologies.
