[PLUG] unable to handle kernel null pointer

I get an error message "unable to handle kernel null pointer..." when attempting to put Debian on my new machine. Red Hat 9 goes into a Kernel panic: "attempted to kill init". Mandrake installs! Is there anyone else who has had hardware that behaved this way?

(3.4 GHz Pentium IV with 1G RAM)
