I suspect that the problem is an illegally long file name, but as read-only, I can't seem to rename it.

if you know the name of the file, you can get its inode and dump/remove it with debugfs

May be a dumb question, but please explain inode. (I'll read man page for debugfs, though.)

i'd be wary of that hypothesis though, the only time i've had filesystems force themselves as read-only
is shortly before drive failure.

I don't think that is the case because the other partitions on the drive aren't having problems. Also, when I ran (and ran and ran and ran, etc.) fschk it pointed to this file a number of times. I am estimating that the file name contains about 300 characters. The name was created automatically with easyTAG, and the particular file contains a medley of tunes, ergo long name. Is there a way to force a rename on a ro-mounted file system?
