But this doesn't change mozilla's behavior, and the file is specified
in the html in a way that makes it unclear to me how to just wget the
file.

Any idea how to do this?  In general, I'd like to set up video/audio
plug-ins so that I can just save them and deal on my own.

You want MozPlugger:

That will hook you up with video and more, if you have the appropriate driver app.
