Any idea how to do this? In general, I'd like to set up video/audio
plug-ins so that I can just save them and deal on my own.

Lots of media is set up only to stream rather than allowing being saved to disk. Most windows media files and realplay format files are only set to stream rather than allowing the saving of the file to disk. You might want to check if that's the case.

mplayer can do streams, too. If you're really unsure, use VLC (streams are what it was originally created for).
