The default was changed in 2.6.7 to be 7.  I believe most distro's put
it back to 0, but if you roll your own, or use a source based distro,
it will get you.  When i up'ed my gentoo box to 2.6.7 this drove me
crazy for a while.  Though, since this affected you with a 2.4 kernel,
i would say its something else.
