I'm not sure what you mean. Obviously you would need to pay for cable TV.

With Tivos you have a few options for the tivo service... (on top of
whatever it costs you for the box itself.)

Get lifetime service ($299) or
Pay a monthly fee $12.99 (or less if you have more than one Tivo)
Pay a monthly fee $4.99 if you have a DirectTV Tivo Box (home media
interface features not yet available)

Get a Tivo with free Tivo Basic service (three days of guide data.)
http://customersupport.tivo.com/knowbase/root/public/tv1199.htm
for info on how free Tivo Basic is different from regular Tivo service.

Get an old Series one tivo of a particular type (don't ask me, I'm not
sure) certain Tivos (I think version 3.1 of the software and below) have
certain features grandfathered in (such as acting as a PVR without needing
guide data or service.)

Get a Lifetime Tivo from someone else (NOT a DirecTV tivo.. DirecTV tivo
lifetime is not transferrable! (it's also no longer available.)) Lifetime
service on regular Tivos IS transferrable for the life of the product.

Tivo the company, I believe bases their revenue model around the service
fees -- they'd rather not be producing boxes, as they're actually
loss-leaders. They do license their software/interface to other
manufacturers, and you have several brand and component options for
devices which have Tivo on them.

I myself got the $299 lifetime service and a 140-hour tivo box.

BTW, if anybody does happen to get a Tivo, or happen to activate service
at any service level, please put my email address (or the address of
SOMEONE in the program!) in as a referral..(they have an absolutely
excellent referral program!)
