Well, from what I rememeber from 2.4 compiles, I used to do:

make clean
make mrproper
make menuconfig
make dep
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install

I never had to duplicate anything in /lib/modules, or anything funky like
that. There's no ENV varibable that I know of that would set this.
