look in /var/log/dmesg

You need to install:
module-init-tools

Also, you may not have compiled certain portions of the kernel as a
module by either compiling it into the kernel or not even compiling it
at all.

Also /etc/modules/ contains a list of modules to load at boot time.
Some of the modules that were in the 2.4 kernel may not be in the 2.6
kernel thus you will get an error message.
