On 08 Sep, 2005, at 20:48, Michael Lazin intoned: I am attempting to connect to a linux box that I have a user account on. I can ssh fine, but I want to connect to the x-server and run x apps. I am using a g4 powerbook with tiger on it. I have xfree86 on my powerbook and am running gnome on it. When I attempt X -query hostname from within gnome it gives me the following error: Installing and running xFree86 on Tiger is a waste of time and resources. Tiger comes with X11 installed and operational. Apple's version of X11 IS xfree86 with the code fixed to interact with the Aqua GUI. You can switch back and forth between Apple's X11 and Aqua with no problems as well as cut and paste between the two. I don't know if it is rational to attempt to run Gnome on top of Aqua. I've run various X-window managers over the years with both Commercial and Apple's X11 SDK and have found that they simply do not work as you expect them to work. That is to say, if all you ever do is boot up and into the X11 environment, and never expect to access the normal Apple Mac environment, then you are fine. But switching between the two or playing with applications across them (like cut and paste operations) simply does not happen with any kind of predictability. The philosophies of X11 and Aqua are quite different and distinct, take for example, one thing which most people use X for -- Font issues. cannot establish listening sockets: make sure an x server isn't already running I believe the Xserver needs to run as root. It is probably running as yourself and cannot access the protected sockets. ... a classic "true but not meaningful" error message. It is also possible that BOTH Apple's X11 and xFree86's server are being started when you fire up your X environment. when I try to connect with a terminal in aqua it appears to connect but nothing happens
