Since you are using stock firmware you can hold the reset button on
the back for 30 sec and it will reset to factory defaults which
should allow you to connect via wired ports, I usually use port 1.
Habit.

I spent the weekend doing much the same. I wasted a bunch of time
trying to get OpenWRT set up on a WRT54G V1.1.

There is, but I've not tried to set it up. The thing to remember is
that the WRT is a WAP54 with a switch added to it.
