Is there a problem here? > How do others handle (or not handle) this? i guess it depends on what you mean by "problem". there's no problem for root to perform a backup/restore under these conditions, but you may encounter non-existant or overlapping uid/gid pairs on other systems which could have unintended consequences in a multiuser environment (like unintentionally granting some users access to certain unintended backup files), or in an environment where a backup from one machine might later be used on another. in either of these two cases your only recourse would be to somehow keep the uid's/gid's consistant, but that is probably not a major concern given that you're probably not needing to worry about anything so complicated to begin with. sean Attachment:
