The display resolution problem was partially solved by realizing it was using vesa, which I think is limited to 1024x768. Switched to nv. As root it is happy now. When I start X via gdm or using startx but as me, it hangs and I have to reboot the machine or at least login from elsewhere and kill a lot of things.
