I have CavTel's $50/mo (+tax +fees=$66/mo) local phone + DSL package. I get a Static IP and 2Mb down speed on my crappy ancient phone line in my center city apartment. I had trouble getting setup. Phone service worked immediately (and is soooo much better than a cell phone), but DSL didn't work until they capped the speed at 2Mb and changed my IP address. Apparently someone stole my IP. I also replaced the last 20 feet of my wiring with CAT5 and replaced the ancient 4 prong nightmare with a modern RJ-11 jack. It worked for a year. I had to reset the modem a few times, mostly after going idle for a long time, but they didn't block anything that I noticed. It stopped working after a storm on a saturday and didn't come back by monday. I called from work and they wouldn't just reset my circuit. I was furious. They claimed I had to be there to help them troubleshoot. nonsense. I called them back from home. The moron I got made me take the DSL filter/splitter out of the circuit and reset my modem. This, of course, cut my telephone connection. It didn't work (of course) so I called back again and got someone smart who reset the DSLAM and it worked again. I haven't had a problem since. I think the problem they have is dealing with Verizon's local circuits. If you have good quality wiring to and from Verizon, you may be able to get 6Mb or even 10Mb speeds for a fraction of the cost of Verizon or Comcast. Overall, it's decent service for a decent price. Negative: loser tech support. Positive: Static IP If, after this *glowing* review, you decide to sign up, mention that I (267-514-9509) referred you. I get $25 on my cavtel debit card. I'll buy you a beer after the next PLUG meeting. So I'm looking for a telephone comany (no VOIP for me) and DSL provider. CavTel is offering a DSL+Phone package for $50, which is cheaper than getting a phone line + DSL (from Earthlink or Speakeasy) or a dry-line (Speakeasy). ___________________________________________________________________________ Philadelphia Linux Users Group -- http://www.phillylinux.org Announcements - http://lists.phillylinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug-announce General Discussion -- http://lists.phillylinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug
