I just recently did this with Verizon.

With the $15.00 service they sent you a minimal Westel modem.
1. Call Verizon and get a user name and password for pppoe.
2. Buy a Linksys Router of your choice.
3. Log in to the Westel modem and set it up as a bridge.
4. Set up the router to negotiate pppoe to verizon along with the
firewall settings and port forwarding that you might want to happen.
5. Connect your computers to the router assigning them either static IP
addresses or using dhcp.

It was a bear to get to someone at Verizon who had a clue about
networking and using other operating systems other than Windows.
