Make sure he participates in choosing the parts. Putting the thing together is often easier than choosing the right part/model number.

As far as cases go, I vote antec.  I have a P160 as does a friend of
mine and the build quality is great.  You could buy a refurb Mac and
reuse the pretty case. :)  I checked some websites that sell Mac
parts, and from what I can tell, they charge way too much for a measly
case.  Try ebay.
