symlinks?  you shouldn't be placing any symlinks anywhere under /usr
(except /usr/local). that's dpkg's domain[1].

if you install software from source, install it in a different location
and use your $PATH (+compile time options if appropriate) to specify a
different location.  for utilities like k3b, last time i checked you
could even specify the path to cdrecord etc in the program settings.

[1] insert FHS reference here.  there is an exception for symlinking
directories, but even this can be problematic.
