Anyway, then in the VM config, you choose either bridged or NAT networking (or a specific configuration if you've created several in the vmware-config.pl) and that becomes the network adapter for the guest. I don't know of a way to add a second network adapter to the guest. Bottom line, I found NAT most flexible for a host with multiple network adapters, but you may have to use bridged instead if the VM must appear to be a first-class citizen of the surrounding network. With NAT it seems like the guest gets network through whatever networking is enabled for the host, while with bridged it's more like the 1-to-1 host to guest networking you described.
