[PLUG] xorg's missing modules on upgrade--Debian

Last night I did a dist-upgrade on my kanotix 2005-4 install, with apt
pointing towards Debian testing and stable.
It seems to have gone mostly ok but x will not start. I get an error
message that modules "bitmap" and "pcidata" cannot be loaded.
In xorg.conf, my ModulePath is /usr/X11R6/lib/modules, however when I look
in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions, it is empty.
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts was empty, too but I found a directory called
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/modules/fonts and copied it over.

xorg is 7.1.0-16
kernel is kanotix' version of 2.6.18

PS: I settled on kanotix a year ago because it was debian-based and
seemed to "just work". However, it's not been updated since and looks
like it never will be. Anyone have any recommendations for another to try
if I can't get this to work, outside of *ubuntu?
