my guess is that the problem has arisen as a result of the migration.  i
know the xorg folks spent huge amounts of time to ensure intra-debian
upgrade paths would work, but i don't think we can fault them for paths
originating from outside debian :)

the first thing i'd recommend is regenerating your xorg.conf
(dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, iirc), because there are probably subtle
differences,such as changed paths in your config file, which weren't
automatically migrated during upgrade.
