If you want to skip the figuring out part and just buy the right parts
first, check out http://www.silentpcreview.com/.
I built a fairly quiet dual-proc Opteron box two years ago and bought
my silent components from http://endpcnoise.com/ and
http://www.quietpcusa.com/.
I have replaced fans inside a power supply and in one of my Macs using
that website as a guide. My B&W G3 which was not too loud to begin
with is now just a minor background noise.
