Subject: [PLUG] Backup packages

I'm finally getting around to setting up a backup system for all the
various machines around my house. Any recommendations as to a good
package to use?

Third vote for http://backuppc.sourceforge.net/.

Oh, and I forgot to mention _Backup & Recovery_ (http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/9780596102463/index.html) is a *great* book.
"Packed with practical, freely available backup and recovery solutions for Unix, Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X systems -- as well as various databases -- this new guide is a complete overhaul of Unix Backup & Recovery by the same author, now revised and expanded with over 75% new material."

It has chapters on Amanda, BackupPC, Bacula, and covers rsync, bare-metal restores, what to look for in a commercial app, backing up RDBMS, VMware and much more (see http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/9780596102463/toc.html).

I highly recommend the book to anyone reading this list, you are squarely in the target audience. Read my short review here: http://www.pantug.org/forum/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=&TOPIC_ID=574 and/or see the book's site at http://www.backupcentral.com/.

Disclaimer: other than really liking it, and being an O'Reilly author myself, I have no connections to this author or book.

Microsoft has single-handedly nullified Moore's Law.
Innate design flaws of Windows make a personal firewall, anti-virus
and anti-malware software mandatory. The resulting software arms race
has effectively flattened Moore's Law on hardware running Windows.
