If memory serves, Sharepoint also wants to do DirectX-y (-y because I don't remember whether it was that or some other MS-specific
service) things,
I don't think this is true. At my last job, we were early adopters of Sharepoint 3. The environment we deployed to was primarily a W2K and IE6 make-up. I'm pretty sure that < 5% of our employees had any version of DirectX installed.
