Thanks Brent, I appreciate your help. I actually just read the post you are referring to before I posted, but after I googled for a couple hours. And, you are correct, There is a LOT of useful information behind those URLs, however, I am thinking that my problem resides outside of the realm discussed in that information, and hoping that there is an easier way to fix the problem (
i.e. relaying through Comacast's mail servers) that someone is already doing here. Of course, I'm not sure about this or else I would have bee-lined to that solution. It is hard to believe that something as simple as ARPANET's original SMTP RFC has evolved into something this complex!
Also, an update: I installed webmin-postfix and poked around in the settings. I haven't discovered anything in there that I think will help me...yet. (And, BOY are there a LOT of settings!)
Overall, I am in a better position now than I was a couple months ago (when using Verizon internet). I think they block outgoing connections to port 25 altogether!
Thanks again, Brent.
Still hoping to find a solution...

unraveling the arcane art of mailservers?" and the responses i got. lots of good resources)

Brent,
When I send to Yahoo! it goes to junk, but when I send to hotmail or my forwarder (ieee.org, which I have forward my mail to my gmail account) it disapears.
I don't know if I get a bounce notice because the "from" email address that the server is sending from is (my linux username)@(my server name).(my domain name) which is not valid because I am only using postfix in the default setup and don't have a pop3 or IMAP server running, and I am extremely novice with postfix/sendmail. Do you know if there is a way to send an email with a different from or reply-to address, and if so, will that help?
Thanks, and I'm sorry if I am totally clueless on this.

when you try to send to an address other than the gmail one (say, a yahoo) does it show up in the junkmail receptacle? do you receive a bounce notice?
Hello PLUG!
I have lived in Philadelphia (Actually Wyncote) for 12 months and I have been subscribing to this mail-list for 8 months now and reading it whenever I get a chance. Well, I am finally ready to write something (for some help!). So, without further ado:
I have a linux box with Xandros 4.0 installed (A Debian based distro, for those unfamiliar) which comes with a default installation of "postfix".
What works: Sending an email to
mobrien118@gmail.com using the "mail" command line application.
What doesn't work: Sending an email just about anywhere else.
So, I believe I need to relay my mail through a trusted server somewhere (maybe a Comcast SMTP server) so that POP and IMAP servers won't simply discard it like yesterday's news. Can someone help me make this work? I also want PHP to be able to send mail, although I think this may already be working since I edited
php.ini. There is only one line that I think needs editing there, anyway.
I have to warn you all that I am just barely into "Intermediate user" status in Linux.
Surely someone on this group is doing this (sending mail over Comcast's lines).
Thanks in advance. I am looking forward to becoming more active in this community!
