oooh, you're about to pop your scripting cherry!

don't worry, it's VERY non-scary. i feel pretty comfortable with it, and i'm the guy that can't write a line of code to save his life. (i can read it for the most part, but write it? nope. can't do it. same thing with french.)

there are a lot of really great texts out there for scripting. i MUST recommend "A Practical Guide to Linux: Commands, Editors, and Shell Programming" by Mark G. Sobell (of the Sobell publishing house, i believe), as well as "Linux Shell Scripting with Bash" by Ken O. Burtch.

the former is a HUGE tome, filled with excercises and summaries and reviews. the latter is a smaller book but focused more on actual scripting theory.

Thanks for the suggestions.  The book looks very interesting - I'm going
to order it.

Having said that (and not addressing you personally), checking around
further illustrates my point.  My non-rant was not an appeal for
software so much as pointing out the difficulty I faced trying to find a
solution.

It's all rather a lot to just back up some files, eh?

seen is ridiculously complex or kludgey.  Imagine having to set up a
server to do backups... or pull... or a web server....

I dl'd a few scripts, which I suppose are going to be my intro to
scripting.  Yes, another thing I've never done in lin.  Imagine the
impending rant :)
