Works here:
steve@charon:~$ cat /etc/resolv.conf 
search lobefin.net
nameserver 127.0.0.1
steve@charon:~$ LOCALDOMAIN=linuxforce.net host tensegrity
tensegrity.linuxforce.net       A       207.8.225.126

Maybe a sample of what you're trying to do would be helpful in spotting
the problem?
