I got Ubuntu to boot just fine. I'm working on making it persistent,
which fails when I follow the instructions. It comes right up.

Pendrivelinux has their own distro, which works, as well as a list of
others and instructions. I think I got PCLinuxOS working too.

As Brent mentioned, Knoppix should work.

The vmware browser appliance suggests you use it as a base to build
something. I haven't tried.

I figure I'll keep trying with (x)Ubuntu, as it's the distro I use on
most desktops, so why not use what I like.

Drives are getting bigger, so size isn't necessarily a determinant.
