Its key shortcuts are very similar to the familiar GUI editors (like Kate, or even notepad.exe) and it does everything a text editor needs to do. I tried setting up jed, but got bogged down configuring it, whereas ne required little if any setup. I used to be an EMACS user, but eventually came to the realisation that I was wasting a lot of time getting the thing to work the way I wanted. As far as other editors are concerned, I know my way around pico/nano (which are mostly awful) and can do the most basic tasks in vi(m). That about covers any system I'd expect to find in the wild.
