The current generation (Santa Rosa) can take 4 GB (2+2), and the previous generation can take ~3 GB (2+1 or 2+2 and just not read it all). It is definitely possible to install unmatched sizes, though there's a trivial performance hit. Since the original poster said they just got the MacBook, odds are it can take 4 GB (unless it was used or refurbished or something).
