If you're on a 2.6 kernel, you may have all the software you need to
create an encrypted filesystem, on a file, within your hard drive.

I don't know if it's what you want, but it might be worth a look. The
bottom of the article walks through an example with Reiserfs, using AES
encryption. The user must supply a password to mount and read the
filesystem.
