a little late but...

the easiest way imho is to use one of the starter wrappers, like 
compiz-manager or fusion-icon (the latter of which sits in your tray and lets 
you start/stop it etc).  i don't know if these or similar are available in 
gentoo, though they are in debian anyway :)
