Casey: What Distro are you running? What about your window manager? KDE, Gnome, etc.? When I experimented with compiz and beryl I was running SuSE (with a un-supported video card as it turns out). There were lots of howto and other helpful docs on the SuSE web site. In particular, I recall that there was a Gnome GUI tool that was used to switch the WM over to compiz.
