Re: [PLUG] OT: Traveling With Your Laptop Over The Border

If my laptop were cherrypicked, the authorities would have a field day with it because my drive is encrypted as mandated by HIPAA regulation.

On a somewhat related note, does anyone know if China allows VPN or SSH connections out of country inbound to the US? I am planning a trip to the country for some time this year, but if I can't crete a secure tunnel between my laptop and my office network, there's no reason for me to bring it in the first place. It's not leaving the country with it or finding out it's useless when I get there, it's the chance of having it confiscated when I come home that bothers me.

How embarrassing ;)

--- Begin Message --- With the travel season here, take care when you travel with your laptop over the US border. The TSA is indiscriminately grabbing peoples laptops and if they do, you wouldn't get it back for at least 2 weeks after they do a forensic scan of all your private data. They are looking for stuff. I've talked with Infosec friends about this trying to find out what the guide lines are, and there are none.

Though I doubt they are looking for that illegal copy of Air Supply on your drive. I would hate to have to go to court over something like that.
