Actually, Xen *does* do a majority of the things ESX does, and you
don't need to go pay, but your conscience probably should indicate a
donation if you're a business. And, for bonus points, Xen relies on
neither Windows nor .NET for management, either of which is a
pain in the ass, let alone both.[1]

[1] This isn't religious derision. This is derision based on
experience with managing each (of VI Infrastructure and Xen).
Professionally. (I still manage ESX day to day. It pays better.)
