I think this is a really bad idea. I rely on Google before I go to the list when I have an issue. If we close the list to indexing we force people to ask the same question's already answered. You say that many forums and lists are doing this, but I think it's a detriment to the community, limiting the information available to troubleshoot an issue. I'm certainly not going to waste time subscribing to and then subsequently logging into many mailing lists to get the answers I need when I need them.
