UPDATE: I swapped the CPU into a very similar MB and it worked fine. So
it looks like the MB, or possibly the case switch. I'll try to fiddle
with the latter later.

"Microsoft Tax" = the additional hardware & yearly fees for the add-on
software required to protect Windows from its own poorly designed and
implemented self, while the overhead incidentally flattens Moore's Law.
