Update:
installed the rest of Gnome and booted up.  Resolution ok.
Unfortunately XFCE is still misbehaving and I can't figure out how to
fix it.  Will hack away more tomorrow at work.

Just to add to the general happiness, my main home box flatly refused to
power up.  Just call me Captain Chaos.
