Yes and hardware drivers and their custom desktop interface, the latter not 
much, but the former very important.

Well the problem would be the drivers.  Apparently a lot of non-standard 
hardware.

With the eee-ubuntu, we have a few repos that provide things like kernel, 
camera and touchpad drivers, and everything else is plain vanilla Ubuntu, but 
Dell chose the Dell-repo-only route.  I don't know why.
