[PLUG] access USB in kvm/qemu

I am using kvm in a Kubuntu 8.04 host, XP guest.  I am using the -usb 
parameter when launching the VM.  XP device manager sees the USB hub and 
ports, but when I plug something in, KDE wants to mount it, and the VM never 
sees it.  

What am I doing wrong, or put another way, am I attempting the impossible?

I understand VirtualBox handles this well, but is comparitively very slow.
