I have an original iPhone, purchased in the 2nd week of its availability --- still going strong, no battery problems and now running 3.0.

The bigger issue with the iPhone is ATT --  I just got a 3gs last week, so now that original iPhone is nothing much more than a glorified "portable computer" ... sill works fine on wifi, but won't talk to "the network" unless I buy another "membership" from ATT.....  almost as annoying as being forced to deal with Comcast!
